Situated on an outcrop of rock on the north bank of the river Douro, half-way between Regua and Pinhao, Quinta do Crasto is arguably the finest estate for the production of red wine in Portugal. There is great strength in depth throughout, from the Douro Red which regularly wins accolades for its exceptional value-for-money, up to the iconic single vineyard wines from century-old vines. The winemaking philosophy is to use pure ripe fruit from traditional Douro varieties, overlaid with barrique ageing where appropriate, and extremely smooth tannins. In the UK, for 2011, Crasto launch their Douro Superior, the perfect mid-range option between the Douro Red and Reserva. Their brilliant Douro White, a refreshing and beautifully balanced blend, should not be overlooked.
