Mas de Monistrol

Penedès (Spain)

...

The Mas Monistrol estate situated in the Monistrol d’Anoia region in the heart of the DO Penedès, this was formerly a Cistercian monastery dating back to the 12th century. Since its beginning, it has been dedicated to the production of quality still wine using grapes from surrounding vineyards and to the production of Cavas made in the traditional method. The old manor house, called Masia L’Hereu is named after the Marqués de Monistrol’s eldest son (L’Hereu) and is now a wine visitors centre.

The ‘Masia’ built in the traditional Catalan architectural style of the region, houses a new gravity fed winery and deep underground cellar for ageing wines in addition to storing 8,000 French and American oak barrels which are used for ageing the red wines. The estates close proximity to the Mediterranean Sea has a beneficial effect on the vineyards which lie on gentle slopes in the valley of the River Anoia, where well known international grape varieties ripen alongside local ones such as Xarel-lo, Parellada and Macabeo. The soils here are a mixture of sandy limestone with a higher concentration of limestone close to the river. The use of high quality grapes combined with expert winemaking skills result in the excellent wines of Mas de Monistrol.
